Abstract: Domestic violence is the extreme manifestation of gender inequality. This study examines the causal effect of clan culture on domestic violence using prefectural level aggregate data from China. To deal with the potential endo- geneity problem arising from omitted variables, we resort to the instrumental variable approach and use the proportion of cultivated land for rice as the instrument. We find that clan culture reduces the propensity for domestic violence, and the effect is mainly driven by rural areas. Furthermore, we use nationally representative micro data and focus on a rural sample to shed light on the potential channels through which clan culture matters. The empirical results show that clan culture has different effects on gender norms and the clan members’ connection between genders, but the differential effects do not tend to cause conflicts and, thus, domestic violence between couples. Based on a careful discussion, we conjecture that clan culture may (partially) affect domestic violence through gender norms and clan member connection.
