Abstract:While boasting is often considered a negative social behavior in many settings, publicly highlighting one’s accomplishments and even exaggerating them, can serve another potential purpose as a type of self-imposed performance motivator. We examine the potential channels through which boastful claims made ex-ante (‘swagger’) and ex-post (‘bragging’), influence individuals’ performances in a real-effort setting in a laboratory experiment. Boasting and the opportunity to boast publicly tends to enhance performance, particularly in a public information setting with social recognition. We also examine the effect of bragging about relative performance compared to others, and dynamic performance effects. The results suggest a potential social surplus enhancing effect of boasting behavior, in spite of the traditionally negative social connotations.
